A CHURCH OF STONE AND MEN

LAGRASSE ABBEY - The Abbaye Sainte-Marie de Lagrasse

A group picture of monks standing in the stairs of Lagrasse Abbey. Lagrasse Abbey is located in the South of France about 20 miles south-east of Carcassonne, in the Aude department of Languedoc-Roussillon.
Founded in the 8th century, the Abbey presents a diversity in architectural styles up until the 18th century. In 2004, the community of canons took up residence at Lagrasse Abbey. This young community – the average age of the canons is 43 years old – brought the Abbey back from abandonment and desolation, shining new light on its architectural beauty elevating its soul with their Gregorian chants. Today, the Abbey is both an idyll of peace and a heart of activity, and is home to a vibrant community.
This is a top-view photo of volunteers looking at Lagrasse Abbey from above. Lagrasse Abbey is one of the most prestigious religious monuments in the South of France.

This community is what sets Lagrasse Abbey apart.

The dedication of the canons, to Lagrasse Abbey and to the community outside of the abbey walls, is unparalleled, welcoming with open arms all who pass through their doors. Each year, Lagrasse Abbey welcomes nearly 20,000 visitors, familiar faces and tourists alike, providing important guidance and care such as:

  • Support to families, young people, at-risk youth, people in need, the sick, people with disabilities and provide palliative care.
  • Hospitality to visitors, the faithful, and participants in spiritual retreats, as well as organize an annual month-long summer volunteer retreat for students and young professionals.
  • Organize sports and cultural events whose profits are donated to various charities.
  • Education through visits to local classrooms, exam preparation for youths, and invitations to scholars to research the Abbey (its history, architecture, gardens, etc.); academics present their research at symposia and in university publications called “Les cahiers de Lagrasse” (“The Lagrasse Notebooks”).
  • Sustainability by promoting long-term environmental action through advocacy to partners and visitors, and maintaining gardens developed with permaculture techniques.
